WASHINGTON, D.C., June 11, 2019 - The U.S. commercial casino industry generated record gaming revenue of $41.7bn in 2018, according to the American Gaming Association’s "State of the States 2019" report produced in collaboration with GamblingCompliance.

The $41.7bn haul was up 3.5 percent on 2017, as all but two of the 24 states with commercial casinos saw an increase in gaming revenue from the prior year and 12 of them posted their highest ever revenue totals.

The annual State of the States report was first published by AGA in 1999 and has been co-produced by GamblingCompliance since 2015.

“2018 was a truly historic year for the U.S. gaming industry, marked by May’s Supreme Court ruling overturning the federal ban on sports betting and the 30th anniversary of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act,” said Mike Woolfrey, CEO of GamblingCompliance. “It was an honor to partner with AGA once again to chronicle the casino industry’s continued growth and to be able to provide such a unique resource for policymakers, executives, academics and other industry stakeholders.”

The record $41.7bn in gaming revenue produced by commercial casinos translated into $9.7bn in direct gaming taxes for state and local governments in 2018, according to the State of the States report.

“Year after year, the commercial casino industry has reaffirmed its role as an economic powerhouse in the United States,” said Bill Miller, president and CEO of AGA. “More people than ever are experiencing the economic and social benefits of gaming in their communities, due in part to the expansion of legal sports betting across the country.”

The AGA’s annual State of the State report includes state-by-state analyses of revenue trends and a breakdown of which types of gaming are legal in each of the 24 commercial gaming states. It also highlights competitive challenges faced by commercial casinos in each state and summarizes the primary discussions in gaming policy that occurred during 2018 in each jurisdiction.
