This report addresses how major international jurisdictions have approached, or are preparing to approach, the sometimes thorny issue of whether sports bodies should be recognised, and even compensated, in legislation authorising betting on their games.

In 2018, the issue quickly moved centre stage in debate over the future shape of the US sports-betting market as the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and golf’s PGA Tour began lobbying for a portion of betting turnover and the ability to restrict bet types in bills being considered by various state legislatures.
