UIGEA Leaves Indelible Mark On U.S. Gaming Landscape

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) remains a controversial and ambiguous law, but its significant impact on the development of the online gaming industry over the past decade is undeniable.

Signed into law by President George W. Bush exactly ten years ago today, UIGEA specifically banned the processing of deposits for unlawful online gaming operations, without actually defining exactly what forms of Internet gambling should be considered unlawful under other state and federal laws.

As a result, UIGEA never served to impose the federal ban on all online gambling that many of its proponents sought.
