Norway’s Payment Ban Fails To Halt Offshore Gambling In 2011

Norway’s gambling watchdog has admitted its online payments ban has “not been a success” as research showed more than half of internet gamblers now play as often as they did before the prohibition.

The Norwegian Gaming Board conceded it was “business as usual” for operators and players in 2011 despite Norway’s banks theoretically blocking payments to offshore gambling websites.

Of the gamblers on foreign sites surveyed by the regulator, 54 percent said they played as frequently as they did before the prohibition came into effect 18 months ago.

The regulator’s report, published last Wednesday, showed that 5 percent of foreign website gamblers actually played more often.
