A long-awaited shift in the basis of online sports betting taxation in Italy has been followed by a significant acceleration in revenue growth and, more recently, increased concentration of market share at the top end of the market.
According to unofficial figures collated by news agency Agipro, Italian online sports betting revenue climbed 28.1 percent year-on-year to €75m on 45.8 percent growth in amounts staked to €953m in the second quarter of 2016.
Incremental betting activity during the opening stages of Euro 2016 in June was offset by a 1.1 percentage point contraction in market-wide net margin to 7.9 percent, meaning that headline revenue growth fell short of the 42 percent upside observed in the first quarter.
