The European Commission has signalled that it has reached a compromise with France over its plan to force companies to obtain permission from sports organisers for the right to bet.Comments by the European Commission’s head of sport appeared to indicate approval of France’s plan.
Michal Krejza, head of the sport unit at the directorate general for education and culture, said: “In principle, we take a positive view of the French idea of creating exploitation rights of sport event organisers from the sports betting operators.”
EC-watchers said that these statements are to be read as signs that the Commission will allow a watered down version of France’s right-to-bet plan to go into a final draft of the country’s new online gambling legislation.
