The prolonged involvement of host country France helped French sportsbooks generate turnover of €297m from this summer’s Euro 2016 football tournament, with online wagering per match up 63 percent versus World Cup 2014 levels.
French online gambling watchdog ARJEL reported on Wednesday that online sportsbooks captured €141.2m of the headline figure, while land-based monopoly Française des Jeux generated the remaining €155.8m across its 25,000-strong network of vendors.
The regulator stated that the journey of beaten finalists France had contributed strongly to betting activity, with the host country’s seven matches driving almost 30 percent of total Euro 2016 wagering both online and in retail locations.
