Dutch Bookmakers Fear Lotteries’ Betting Tax Advantage

Bookmakers are already concerned that Dutch state-owned lotteries will have a head start when licensed online sports betting begins, with lower taxes on their retail operations plus a database of existing customers to solicit for business.

When Dutch online gambling launches, possibly as soon as 2017, De Lotto and the state lottery (Staatsloterij) will go head-to-head with commercial operators at a 29 percent base rate.

But De Lotto currently operates retail sports betting at the same lower tax rate as its lottery, and that differential appears set to continue.
