A pair of bitterly contested tribal gaming proposals in Massachusetts are down but not out, with their ultimate fate hinging on the 2020 presidential election and the outcome of complex legal battles.
One of the state’s two federally-recognized tribes, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, also known as the Aquinnah, hopes to resume work soon on a bingo slot hall on the resort island of Martha’s Vineyard, having broken ground earlier this year before getting hit with a court challenge.
The other, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, have the backing of the front-runner in the Democratic president primary, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, for their $1bn resort proposal, with its ultimate fate likely hinging on the outcome of the 2020 election.
