A group of 13 members of a Baptist church in Bristol, Virginia, took a five-hour trip to the state capital of Richmond to lobby for two casino bills that were passed in both houses of the legislature on Tuesday.
Bristol is one of five cities in Virginia that would be allowed to develop casinos under a bill approved by the House of Delegates in a 61-33 vote.
The other cities include Danville, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond.
The Senate approved a similar bill by a tally of 29-11.
As the bills differ in some respects including tax rates, a conference of lawmakers from each chamber will ultimately be required to cobble together a compromise version before the Virginia legislative session ends on March 7.
