Senator Orrin Hatch has released a discussion version of his federal sports-betting legislation for stakeholders, with the veteran Utah Republican hoping to see a bill passed before he retires.
“I think we would like to pass it,” Hatch told GamblingCompliance on Tuesday after a discussion draft of his bill was first leaked to ESPN. “It’s got some real reasons for existence.”
In response to questions, Hatch conceded he may have to try and bypass the Senate Judiciary Committee whose current chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, has expressed strong opposition to his effort.
Grassley believes Congress should stay out of the matter and leave it up to the states to decide.
