The United States' professional sports leagues have been handed a defeat in their attempts to control the use of statistics and players’ names in fantasy sports games, establishing an important precedent for anyone looking to set up a fantasy sports league in the US.The $500m online fantasy sports industry in the United States has received a boost from the US Supreme Court that last week let stand an appellate ruling that will allow them to continue in operation without the need to make licensing payments. And while the US Supreme Court’s recent refusal to consider Major League Baseball’s appeal in a First Amendment case does not directly benefit gambling or wagering, it establishes a significant victory for anyone looking to set up a fantasy sports league in the US.
