State gambling regulators across the US are being forced to take on more work, even as they find their staff and budgets frozen or slashed amid the economic downturn.In possibly the most dramatic example, West Virginia’s Lottery Commission would take charge not only of all gambling in the state, but would also regulate alcohol sales and athletic events under a controversial new proposal.
But West Virginia is hardly alone. Gambling regulators in nearby Delaware may soon be overseeing sports betting as well as racinos, while in Maine the number of slot machines has doubled despite the shrinking of staff numbers at the state’s gambling control board. Similar complaints can be found among gambling regulators in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
