U.S. Policymakers Explore Pathways To Tribal Online Betting

The state of Michigan and members of the U.S. Congress are offering alternative responses to one of the most pressing legal questions in U.S. sports betting — how tribes will participate in online gambling.

On December 19, the day before Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill authorizing tribes to obtain state licenses for internet gambling and sports wagering on the same terms as commercial casinos, four members of the U.S. House of Representatives proposed federal legislation that would amend the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) to permit tribes to offer mobile betting as sovereign tribal governments.
