Lawyers speaking at an industry conference in London questioned the wisdom of U.S. states requiring that bookmakers buy official league data from the major sports leagues, warning such requirements could have unintended consequences.
Mandating the use of league-endorsed data will not work in some situations, such as when bookmakers want to offer bets from leagues or sports federations that do not have exclusive data providers, such as the FIFA World Cup, said Jake Williams, U.S. head of legal at Sportradar.
“If you tell bookmakers they can’t accept bets from the biggest sports event in the world, you’re going to have complaints,” he said.
