The worst fears of Indian Country were confirmed last week when officials at the Department of the Interior rejected a raft of applications for off reservation casino projects. Tribal leaders responded with anger and frustration, and while more court cases are inevitable their best hope may now lay with regime change in the White House.The Bush Administration had long been known to hold a cynical distaste for tribal proposals to acquire off-reservation land for new gambling ventures, but until now the Department of the Interior had merely adopted a go-slow approach to applications for off reservation land use, declining to approve or reject them.
