A US Federal Court has ordered Las Vegas Sands chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson to pay compensatory damages and costs to the all-but-defunct National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) and a former NJDC chairman over a baseless defamation suit tied to his Macau operations.
The US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Monday granted summary judgment to the non-profit NJDC and co-plaintiff Marc Stanley, setting up a compensatory damages order against Adelson in the near future.
But the court also denied summary judgment for some $24m in punitive damages, meaning that this part of the case will proceed to the deposition of Adelson in two weeks in Las Vegas, the Courthouse News Service reported on Monday.
