The Virgin Island (VI) Lottery has promised to take firmer control of video lottery terminals on the islands after an audit conducted by the US Department of the Interior questioned the legality of its contract with operator Southland Gaming, as well as finding “serious deficiencies” in its monitoring and record keeping processes.
According to the report released last Friday by the Department of the Interior’s Office of the Inspector General, the government of the Virgin Islands may have lost out on millions of dollars in potential taxes from VLT’s on the islands due to a questionable clause in the contract between the lottery and operator Southland Gaming, as well as a failure to adequately track revenue from the machines.
