In an effort to harmonise the taxes faced by disgruntled bingo operators with those applicable to other player-to-player games, Her Majesty’s Treasury has indicated that poker games played in licensed casinos could become subjected to casino duty, pending a review.
Concerned with potential losses due to the recent implementations of smoking bans in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, UK bingo operators have condemned the way that bingo is taxed and called upon the Treasury to exempt them from paying VAT. In statements to the House of Commons, however, the Treasury has consistently (and incorrectly) denied that bingo operators are subject to a greater tax burden than operators of similar games.
