The UK desperately needs a large full-scale gambling prevalence study funded independently of the gambling industry to attract top researchers, a prominent clinician has said.
That nearly all problem gambling research in the UK is commissioned by the industry-funded GambleAware charity deters researchers concerned about "tainted" research, said Henrietta Bowden-Jones, founder and director of the National Problem Gambling Clinic in London.
"Up to now, a lot of people we need to do the work, they won't come for £60m, even £100m, they won't come for [research funding] that's been given to us by the industry," she said.
