Gambling has, for the moment, slipped down the political agenda in the UK as the country’s politicians are consumed by Brexit, but fresh from a stinging loss in the high-street war on fixed-odds betting terminals the sector is still struggling to articulate its own message of progress against the onslaught from its opponents.
“The wind is blowing in the wrong direction for the industry,” according to Joe Saumarez Smith, long-standing industry expert and chairman at Bede Gaming. “And that is not something that is easy to change.”
“The industry’s attitude towards responsible gambling has changed substantially in the past three years but I am not sure that we have done a great job of conveying that message to politicians and the public,” he added.
