UK Gambling Minister Tests Industry Nerves

The UK’s new gambling minister John Penrose had no words of reassurance for the betting and racing industries when asked by MPs this week about two of the most sensitive live issues facing the high street bookmakers — the future of the Tote and of highly lucrative FOBT gaming machines. On the subject of machines DCMS minister John Penrose was happy to tell Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy that he had met with Baroness Julia Neuberger, chair of the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board on June 3.

“A range of issues relating to the research, education and treatment of problem gambling in the UK were discussed at my meeting,” he said.
