UK Data Regulator Targets Gambling Affiliates Over Spam

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said it is targeting more than 400 affiliate marketing companies believed to be improperly using people’s personal data to promote online gambling websites, a violation that could lead to fines of up to £500,000.

The crackdown on affiliates follows an outpouring of attention focused on the UK’s gambling operators and suppliers, ranging from the UK Gambling Commission chief executive threatening higher fines and licence reviews for infractions to the government launching a review of gambling machine stakes and prizes and daytime advertising.
