Bingo is left to bemoan its ‘double taxation burden’ as lobbying campaigns to remove VAT from bingo gaming are ignored. With the UK-wide smoking ban approaching, the industry is concerned for its future.
Of all industry sectors left disappointed by Wednesday’s Budget, it is perhaps bingo whose future is most under threat due to the upcoming smoking ban in all public places throughout England and Wales. The industry had hoped that Chancellor Gordon Brown would remove VAT from bingo games in order to compensate for a likely decline in revenues once the smoking ban takes effect in July.
“Given the impact of the smoking ban, now is the time for the Chancellor to act,” said Gala Coral chief executive Neil Goulden, prior to the Budget. “The industry needs his help.”
