Telangana State Bans Online Gambling, Including Skilled Games

India’s Telangana state has announced a wholesale prohibition of online gambling, imposing custodial penalties for players, including for skilled games such as poker and rummy.

The Deputy Chief Minister of India’s youngest state told reporters on Saturday that individuals convicted of gambling online will be jailed for one year and fined 5,000 rupees ($78), with penalties doubling for a second offence.

“Soon after the formation of Telangana [in 2014], the Chief Minister ordered police to crack down on clubs and other places which encourage gambling,” Kadiyam Srihari said.

“But the government received complaints that people are now indulging in online gambling.
