Taiwan’s Executive Yuan Shelves Casino Bill

Senior Taiwanese politicians have sought to decouple the issue of casino liberalization on the outlying Islands from the accelerating election process, but their decision to halt progress on a bill that would have opened the door to casino development has drawn sharp criticism from local leaders who fear the islands may now be by-passed.Last week Taiwan’s cabinet passed several amendments to the Offshore Islands Development Act, a bill which has long been intended to be the vehicle to permit casino development on the outlying Pescadores islands, but while duty-free shopping was permitted on three of the islands including Penghu, broader changes to betting and gaming laws were conspicuously absent.
