Swedish rules limiting bonuses to registration are so distorting the market that problem gamblers googling for ways to sign up for the nationwide self-exclusion system will first see how to dodge the system by joining an illegal gambling website, industry advocates say.
The Swedish one-time bonusing system creates perverse incentives, teaching players to be promiscuous, said Gustaf Hoffstedt, general secretary of BOS, the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling.
This jumping from site to site means that operators cannot track players to see if they are developing gambling problems, he said.
"They actually should have done the opposite, prohibit acquisition bonuses and allow retention" bonuses, Hoffstedt said.
