Sweden could ban bets on yellow cards and similar match events, but despite claims by the country’s gambling minister that a prohibition is imminent, the state regulator insists a decision has yet to be made.
Comments on Monday by Ardalan Shekarabi, the minister for social security, sparked a panicked industry reaction, after he said that the country would ban bets on yellow cards, corners, throw-ins and other non-goal match events.
Shekarabi was speaking to the DN newspaper following a meeting with the Swedish Football Association and Swedish Ice Hockey Association, which support the proposed betting prohibition based on the belief that it will prevent match-fixing.
