The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that the city council has no authority to interfere with the state Gaming Control Board’s selection of a site for the SugarHouse casino in downtown Philadelphia and said that it must grant the casino the necessary permits to begin construction without further delay.The ruling in Pennsylvania’s highest court on Monday effectively grants the owners of the planned SugarHouse casino permission to commence construction at the site along the Delaware River. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board awarded the licences for two planned casinos in Philadelphia to SugarHouse and Foxwoods in December 2006 but plans have effectively been stalled due to vociferous opposition by Philadelphia residents and city politicians.
