Leading loot box purveyor Valve Corporation is quietly experimenting with methods to appease European gambling regulators, while eager gamers develop ways to circumvent its restrictions.
US-based Valve, whose Dota 2 and Counterstrike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) titles have fallen afoul of regulators in Belgium and the Netherlands, last week made unannounced changes to the way it handles loot boxes.
The alterations were uncovered on social media platform Reddit by a Dutch player who was attempting to purchase a “treasure chest”, Dota 2’s version of the pervasive loot box phenomenon.
