As States Gear Up For Sports Betting, California Tribes Stay On Sideline

The more remote location of many tribal casinos in California may leave politically powerful tribes reluctant to support a complex initiative to legalize sports betting in what could be the largest wagering market in the United States, according to one senior tribal official.

A pending bill to authorize sports betting in California is likely to “garner a lot of attention,” ahead of the possible U.S. Supreme Court ruling to overturn a federal ban, said Steve Bodmer, general counsel for the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, owner of one of California’s most successful Indian casinos.
