Retailers Oppose Massachusetts Lottery's Desire For Online Sales

The legislative effort to move the Massachusetts State Lottery online continues to be opposed by retailers who argue the disruption to their businesses is unnecessary given the agency is already posting record profits, according to an industry lobbyist.

Rob Mellion, executive director and general counsel for the Massachusetts Package Store Association (MPSA), said his members are already dealing with several issues, not the least of which is a world-wide decline in alcohol consumption.

Mellion added that members are also feeling the economic impact from tariffs on goods from the European Union, China, Mexico and Canada, and a loss of sales resulting from the introduction of recreational cannabis in Massachusetts.
