The UK Gambling Commission has warned three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs they face prosecution and fines, which could run to millions of pounds, if they continue to promote controversial betting operator 1xBet.
The gambling regulator wrote to Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham football clubs after the Russian firm had its UK licence suspended.
The Gambling Commission confirmed that it had contacted the three clubs to say any promotion of 1xBet in Britain may be unlawful, meaning they risk unlimited fines and up to 51 weeks' imprisonment.
The commission said licensed betting firms were not permitted to advertise on sites with illegal material, according to a report in the Sunday Times.
