Santa Casa, Portugal’s lottery and retail sports-betting monopoly, has launched an online sports-betting venture following last year’s reversal on online gambling.
The new venture Sociedade de Apostas Sociais (SAS), a joint enterprise with other Portuguese social charities, “will allow the social sector of society to play a relevant part in the online betting market aligning social ends and results”. the group said in a press release.
Betclic and Bet Entertainment Technologies already have sports-betting licences in Portugal, but Santa Casa would make an immediate impact due to its high profile, one Portuguese and Spanish gambling consultant said.
“Santa Casa spent €18m last year on marketing; that’s a huge budget for Portugal,” said Rui Magalhães.
