The organisers of an annual poker tournament risk incurring the wrath of the Israeli authorities after a court refused to hear their petition that Texas Hold ‘em is a game of skill and consequently not prohibited by Israeli law.The Israel Poker Federation went before the country’s High Court of Justice earlier this week seeking a formal declaration that they should be allowed to stage the tournament due to begin in Tel Aviv this coming weekend.
Despite having staged the poker tournament without incident in previous years, the association was told by the Israeli authorities earlier this month that it would not be eligible to receive a formal permit to stage the Texas Hold ‘em event as poker is considered an illegal game under the Israeli penal code.
