Gaming analysts and financiers are warning of ongoing and significant obstacles to a best-case timetable for the opening of Japan’s integrated resorts (IRs), including the launch of an Osaka IR by 2025.
Panellists at the Japan Gaming Congress have backed away from public declarations of confidence in the timely selection of IR licensees, highlighting numerous challenges that will likely delay IR openings to the second half of the 2020s.
Morgan Stanley gaming analyst Praveen Choudhary ruled out a tandem opening with the World Expo altogether.
“Osaka will not open its casino before Expo. It is impossible to open before 2025,” he said. “And the reason is not that Osaka is not doing everything in its capacity to do that.”
