New York Racinos Offer Obstacle To Mohegan’s Northeast Power-Play

Mohegan Sun’s push to create a regional network of feeder casinos is running into stiff opposition in the Empire State, with a trade group that represents New York’s racinos vowing to fight the Connecticut casino giant’s latest expansion proposal.

Members of the New York Gaming Association agreed unanimously at a meeting last week to oppose Mohegan’s proposal to build a $600m casino in the Catskills, a short drive from New York City, according to Jim Featherstonhaugh, an influential Albany lawyer and lobbyist and president of the association.

Separately, Mohegan faces the threat of potential legal action from Empire Resorts, which owns Monticello Raceway, a racing and video lottery complex in the heart of the mountainous resort region.
