Gamblers from across the Northeast, who helped fuel the rise of the giant Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos, have dramatically scaled back their spending at the two Connecticut resorts amid the economic downturn, a new report suggests.Massachusetts gamblers, long the best customers for the two powerhouse tribal casinos, have cut back their spending nearly 20 percent over the past two years, a new University of Massachusetts Dartmouth report finds.
A similar trend was found when it came to spending at the two tribal casinos by gamblers from other states in the region, including to the south in New York.
Still, despite the cutbacks, New England’s casino industry, led by Mohegan and Foxwoods, is still hauling in massive levels of revenue and profits.
