The Scottish Parliament has called for a mandatory levy on the gambling industry to be introduced in a bid to help problem gamblers.
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is writing to Andy Burnham, the UK Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, urging him to consider the move.MacAskill said money raised by the levy should go to the Responsibility in Gambling Trust - a charity which provides counselling for those addicted to gambling.
“Gambling is not just another industry,” he said. “What can be a harmless pastime for the majority can be a terrible addiction for others.
