The next time you fly to Las Vegas, it might be worthwhile to think about the man behind the name of McCarran International Airport.
The sleazy, corrupt Senator Pat Geary in the classic movie “The Godfather Part II” is based in part on former U.S. Senator Pat McCarran of Nevada.
But there is a big difference between the fictional Senator Geary who is portrayed on screen as a hapless tool of the Corleone crime family and the real-life Senator McCarran.
“McCarran controlled the mobsters who ran Nevada’s casinos more than they controlled him,” said Michael Green, an associate professor of history at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
