Wynn Resorts took the first big step towards making good on its multibillion-dollar bet on the New England gaming market, opening the doors of its $2.6bn Encore Boston Harbor on Sunday.
Thousands of people lined up for the opening of the 671-room resort, marking the end of an eight-year quest by the Las Vegas-based gaming company to establish a casino in the Massachusetts market.
Matthew Maddox, CEO of Wynn Resorts, talked openly of major expansion plans aimed at turning the property, which sits on a 33-acre reclaimed industrial site along the Mystic River in Everett, into an entertainment hotspot in the northeast.
