March Madness opens full throttle on Thursday, with the male-dominated event expected to set another record for sports betting.
Hordes of young men in their 20s and 30s will roam the sports books of Nevada during the next four days in what has become almost a ritual of male bonding.
“We jokingly say it’s a man-cation,” said Jay Kornegay, vice president of race and sports operations at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
“Most of the clientele are made up of guys in groups of two to six,” Kornegay said. “They’re reuniting every single year and converge on Vegas during this time.”
It is not unusual to come across men in their 70s “who have been doing this for 30 years,” Kornegay said.
