Macau Still Eyeing Full Smoking Ban After Lawmakers Back Lounges

Macau’s legislature has passed compromise amendments to allow smoking in dedicated lounges for mass market and VIP areas, but the government has signalled that a full ban remains the “ultimate goal”.

The Legislative Assembly brought years of jockeying over smoking in casinos to a temporary conclusion on Friday night after voting 24-8 to allow casinos to install smoking lounges in mass gaming and VIP areas.

The amendments ban smoking from all gaming tables and surrounding areas and restrict smoking within casino properties to lounges with state-of-the-art smoke retention and extraction systems.
