Are lotteries “dusty and crusty and old and not even part of this century”? That was the contention of Susan Standiford, ZEAL Network’s chief operating officer, speaking on a panel entitled “State Lotteries vs Private Lotteries — Eternal Enemies or Friends in the Making” at the recent ICE Totally Gaming conference in London.
Standiford of ZEAL, a London-based online lottery company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, admitted she had meant to be provocative, but her comments were not far out of line with other panellists.
“If state lotteries are not adjusting using new technology, they might die,” said Friedrich Stickler, former president of European Lotteries trade group and today a lotteries and sports consultant.
