Litigation Likely In U.S. Sports Betting’s Post-PASPA Era

The scope of the federal Wire Act, rights of sports leagues to control real-time game data and participation by Indian tribes and state lotteries are among legal issues set to be brought to the front-burner now that a federal ban on expanded sports betting has been overturned, according to gaming and sports law experts.

After victory for New Jersey in its eight-year quest to topple the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), lawyers see several pockets of legal uncertainty that could now be litigated as states regulate wagering and gaming interests, sporting bodies and anti-gambling activists respond to legislative developments.
