Kenya’s gambling regulator has ordered Safaricom, the telecoms firm that operates mobile money giant M-Pesa, to suspend mobile transactions for a list of 25 gambling operators that have lost their licences.
Litti Wambua, director of the Betting Control and Licensing Board, sent a letter to Safaricom’s legal department demanding that the company “suspend their paybills and short codes until advised otherwise”.
Wambua stated that the operators in question would not have their licences renewed until they met their “outstanding renewal requirements” and have passed ongoing “due diligence”.
The regulator’s blacklist includes the largest two gambling firms in the country, SportPesa and Betin.
