A leading observer of Japan’s push to establish integrated resorts (IRs) has warned that a tight timeline, a lack of “solid capability” in some local governments and pending tax rules are becoming urgent challenges for operators and host cities.
Toru Mihara, an Osaka University of Commerce professor and long-time government advisor on gaming matters, told the Goldman Sachs Entertainment and Gaming Forum in Tokyo on Friday that applicant companies and governments must “compress” schedules to submit feasible IR applications by the proposed deadline of July 30, 2021.
