Italy Slot Tax Row Headed For CJEU

  • Court says government only increased payments to prop up budget
  • Operator lawyers hope cash will be returned if ruling goes their way

The fate of €500m in Italian slot machine fees is set to be decided by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), with the government facing the possibility of a massive tax refund.

Last week the Italian Council of State accepted the request of a number of gaming machine operators by referring several elements of their ongoing case against the state to Europe’s highest court.
