Italy’s Gambling IT System Survives Mafia-Linked Internal Inquiry

Italy’s gambling monitoring system has survived an investigation by its government masters into suspected flaws exposed by the country’s ongoing mafia investigations.

The "Galassia" inquiry into Italy’s state-run Sogei IT system, to which all of the country’s slot machines and video lottery terminals must be connected, had been triggered by its apparent failure to draw attention to betting shops and slot halls linked to organised crime.

In a statement last week, however, the government concluded that as the illegal gambling operations were taking place online on servers situated offshore, it would have been impossible for Sogei to detect them.
