India’s sports minister has condemned sports betting and other gambling as “illegal and immoral”, reflecting stubborn political resistance to reform some 16 months after the Law Commission of India backed legalisation to regulate the activities.
Kiren Rijiju, the national government’s minister for youth affairs and sports and a former interior minister and one-time athlete, lined up against calls for sports-betting reform by several eminent committees in an Indian Express interview published today.
“I am against any form of betting and gambling,” he said, when asked about sports betting. “It is illegal and immoral.”
